Flashing LEDs

Nadia learned soldering 101 here..Dad and daughter working on a simple flashing LED circuit. She loved it!

It’s just like a glue gun…

Here’s the final circuit all ready to be connected to a battery source.

And here Nadia is demonstrating how she can make the LEDs flash faster or slower. Cool stuff and a lot of fun!

Have a great day.

Cloud in a vase

This is a real cool experiment to teach kids about clouds and rain. Some water in a jar with shaving cream on top of it, to simulate air and some clouds and then some colors…that’s all you need.

DSCF3919

After using the dropper to drop about 30 drops, the red color finally made it through as rain from the clouds…

Some more red…

Sewing a bunny in a blanket

Nadia has been learning to sew. She is super excited and is enjoying it very much.

Here, she is making a little bunny rabbit. Isn’t he cute?

She made him a little pillow and a blanket with a pretty flower on it. She stuffed the bunny and the pillow with Ozzie’s hair 🙂

Here he is, all snug in his little Altoids bed.

Here’s to more sewing projects!

Cheers,

Aruna

MRI scanning

Nadia always asks what we do at work. “Design Medical Devices”…what’s a medical device? I explained a bit about how devices help doctors and then we built an MRI machine…out of lego 🙂DSCF7798

DSCF7799Here she is building the scanner….we used a reference picture from the web to build this.DSCF7800

Creating a masterpiece with ice

This was such a fun activity. I froze some water in a dish overnight.

Today evening, took it out and placed the mould on a tray. We used an old baking tray that we have set aside for such experiments. Nadia poured some salt on the ice.

DSCF2615

The salt lowered the freezing point of water. The ice started to melt and salt dissolved in the water. This adding ions that increased the temperature so that the water could refreeze. This created little cracks in the ice which helped us do this next part.

Note: Salt it used in ice cream makers for above reason. It makes the ice cream cold enough to freeze.

Next, Nadia poured food coloring onto the ice and then on it was a ooh-aah session of watching the colors make their way through the cracks.

Nadia had a fine time, poking around with a stick trying to make the colors move faster.

Here is her finished masterpiece 🙂 The blue looks so pretty.

Fireworks in a glass

Here’s a pretty cool one. Add a few spoons of oil and some food coloring together. Mix them up with a spoon.

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (Kalam dadu as Nadia says)

My favorite quote by the great Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam – “If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.”

I strongly agree with this…the mother, father and the teacher are such important elements in a child’s outlook in life.

We took some time while driving to Ankara to tell Nadia a little bit about Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. She asked – “Is he watching me from the sky now?” (reference Lion King, Mufasa). That’s what Nadia knows about death now, that people who die watch and guide us from the sky. I believe that too. I am sure in moments of quiet, we can hear them guiding us.

At the hotel in Ankara we made a small drawing as a tribute to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Same as usual, I drew and Nadia colored.

We did not have any white paint, so Nadia used toothpaste to add some white in his hair.
