Coral reef diorama

Nadia wanted to do painting today and she specifically wanted to paint a star-fish. So we made this coral reef diorama. Nadia painted the inside of an old shoe-box blue while I drew some fishes, an octopus, a jelly-fish and some coral reefs out. She then helped cut them out.

Then she painted each one of them. I absolutely love her concentration here.

DSCF2605

She then stuck them onto the box with glue.

She used a few rocks from her dinosaur box to make a seat for the octopus and also added them to the floor of the ocean. I took this opportunity to explain what invertebrates are (like star-fishes). So now, if you ask her for an example of an invertebrate she can show you one.

Have a great week.

A green forest

Green is the color for today. We decided to make a tiny forest for Nadia’s dinosaurs to explore. We drew some tree shapes on index papers and Nadia painted them.

DSCF2653

For the tree trunks, we used a paper tower roll. Nadia painted it part brown and part green. Then, we cut it into pieces.

DSCF2654

Once the trees dried, Nadia added some apples onto the trees.

DSCF2655

Then Nadia cut all the shapes out.

DSCF2657

I just love the concentration on her face here.

DSCF2660

Finally, here are all our pieces. Next step, lets put them together.

DSCF2656

Here Nadia is fitting the trees into the trunks.

DSCF2661

Here’s the final version of the forest (it turned out to be more of an apple grove 🙂

Nadia had a great time playing all morning.

Happy Independence Day

Today, we created a painting to commemorate 15th August, Indian Independence day. This was two quick 15 minute sessions. The first session, Nadia painted the background on the canvas. Green and Orange to depict the Tiranga (3-color) Indian flag.

DSCF2639

DSCF2641

To depict freedom we added some butterflies, using a butterfly stamp (my sister lent us). Nadia used the stamp to cut out the butterflies.

DSCF2647

DSCF2651

Next, I drew a black silhouette of the Taj Mahal.

DSCF2642

She then stuck the butterflies onto the canvas.

DSCF2644

Here is our finished painting.

DSCF2646

I took the opportunity to explain the concept of freedom to Nadia. Given our anti-zoo talks, I think she understands the topic quite well. Happy Independence Day to all my Indian friends. We will be celebrating all day tomorrow at IndiaFest…how wonderful that it has actually fallen on a Saturday. I will be at the Vibha booth at IndiaFest most of the time and at 4pm my band “Milwaukee Heartbeats” will be playing. So swing by for some fun, food and music!

Have a great weekend.

Creating a masterpiece with ice

This was such a fun activity. I froze some water in a dish overnight.

Today evening, took it out and placed the mould on a tray. We used an old baking tray that we have set aside for such experiments. Nadia poured some salt on the ice.

DSCF2615

The salt lowered the freezing point of water. The ice started to melt and salt dissolved in the water. This adding ions that increased the temperature so that the water could refreeze. This created little cracks in the ice which helped us do this next part.

Note: Salt it used in ice cream makers for above reason. It makes the ice cream cold enough to freeze.

Next, Nadia poured food coloring onto the ice and then on it was a ooh-aah session of watching the colors make their way through the cracks.

DSCF2622

DSCF2626

Nadia had a fine time, poking around with a stick trying to make the colors move faster.

Here is her finished masterpiece 🙂 The blue looks so pretty.

A bunny and his home

We made a bunny today! Nadia stuck his feet and ears on. She then painted the bunny.

DSCF1073

DSCF1074

I added on some minor details, eyes, nose, paws etc.

DSCF1079

Next, we built a home for the bunny. Nadia painted this roll and then we cut a window in it.

DSCF1058

For the roof, we decided on a cone shape. Nadia cut a circle and then glued it to create a cone shaped roof.

DSCF1059

Here’s how it looked.

A visit to the beach

This post is inspired by our beach visit while on vacation last week. We used simple things from home to create this simple beach scene. Nadia started out by painting the sea on a paper plate.

DSCF2593

DSCF2594

Leaving the paper plate to dry, Nadia next made a paper blanket.

DSCF2595

Next, we used play-dough to make a beach-ball, a pair of flip-flops, an umbrella stand and a beach bag.

IMG_1222

I helped Nadia also make a star-fish.

IMG_1225

We used dough to create the sand and put everything together. A beach umbrella (using a straw and a cone made from paper), a plastic palm tree and our play-dough objects completed the scene.

Here is Nadia, pretty pleased with her creation.

Cluck cluck

Toilet roll hens here…We used 1/2 a toilet roll, some paint and scrap paper to create this one.

DSCF1034

Nadia built the nest using a precut egg carton section (previously seen used as a chopper in her airport project).

DSCF1035

She then painted the roll brown and cut it in half.

DSCF1036

We then stuck a beak, a crest and drew some eyes.

DSCF1037

Here’s the mother hen sitting on her egg…cluck cluck!

Baby shower

I helped host a baby shower for a dear friend at our place. It was a small, intimate lunch. Nadia helped with each of these decorations and both of us had a blast creating them.

We started with a banner…I drew small animals and baby clothes on paper and Nadia helped cut them out and stuck them. We then hung some rope and pinned them on using clothespins.

DSCF1080

DSCF1081

We put our Christmas led lights to great use by adding it to our banner.

DSCF2563

DSCF2564

This next idea was inspired by a pinterest post. We wanted something meaningful for the to-be mother to take home. Nadia helped cut out these animals and we put some pens and clips so that the guest could write their wishes for the baby and the parents.

DSCF1075

Everyone hung their wishes up and here’s a look at that.

DSCF2566

DSCF2567

Finally, we created a simple centerpiece for the desert table. Nadia painted and glued together a tiny box and we attached a balloon on it. This is inspired by our hot air balloon ride from Cappadocia. In Nadia’s eye, she has created a hot air balloon ride for the little baby boy.

Fireworks in a glass

Here’s a pretty cool one. Add a few spoons of oil and some food coloring together. Mix them up with a spoon.

Nadia wanted to try it again with just red color. So here goes!

Nadia’s first masterpiece

While in Cappadocia we visited an underground ceramic museum in Avanos. This is the world’s first and only underground ceramic museum by a family engaged in the ceramic business for five generations.

The owner was kind enough to let Nadia (or Princess as everyone in Turkey is calling her) try her hand at pottery with Nayeem’s help. Here’s the two of them at the kick-wheel. They took some teracotta clay and shaped it into a small pot.

pot1

Using their hands they shaped the clay, while Nayeem kept the wheel going with his feet.

pot2

Here is the final finished version.

pot3

We bought a few ceramic pieces at their store which will be shipped directly to our home. Nadia’s pot will be baked and shipped to us. Once we receive it we can then paint a design together.

Our Turkey vacation is coming to an end, another 4 days and it’s back home to Wisconsin.

Have a great week.

Aruna
